Start Here: How to Plan a Trip as a Couple

Traveling together is easier when you follow a simple, shared framework.

These steps help you avoid stress, reduce decision fatigue, and stay aligned throughout the planning process.

1. Choose Your Shared Couples Travel Style

Most couples fall into one or more of these categories:

  • Relaxation & sandy beaches
  • Food & wine
  • Culture & history
  • Adventure & nature
  • City exploration
  • Luxury escapes
  • Budget‑friendly travel

Pick your top two — they will guide everything else. If your choices don’t align well, agree on a compromise for your romantic escape. Perhaps two most romantic vacations will be necessary to meet both of your objectives.

2. Agree on Your Trip Priorities

Before choosing a destination, decide what matters most:

  • Budget
  • Travel time
  • Weather
  • Activities
  • Dining
  • Privacy
  • Max or Litlle Adventure
  • Pace (slow vs. active)

This prevents disagreements later. You will need to agree if you wish a good time.  There is no perfect place, just the best vacation spots if you both agree and are willing to compromise.

3. Build a Simple Couples Travel Framework

Use this 5‑step structure:

  1. Dream — brainstorm destinations
  2. Decide — choose one together
  3. Design — build your itinerary
  4. Book — flights, hotels, activities
  5. Enjoy — stay flexible and present

This keeps both partners involved without overwhelming either one. Robin and I share the responsibility in putting together our two and three month travel itineraries. Having agreed on an overall game plan, I’ll do most of the big picture planning, finding the best hotels and hopefully direct flights, and Robin fills in the details with excursions, tours and restaurant reservations.
