If traveling to Phuket from the United States, unless you are on a cruise ship like we were for our second visit, the easiest way to get to Phuket from the USA is by flying. Since there are no direct flights, you’ll need to take a connecting flight through a major hub in Asia or the Middle East. Here’s how:

Best Flight Routes for Traveling to Phuket, Thailand

  • Via the Middle East: Airlines like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad offer flights from major U.S. cities (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago) with a stop in Dubai, Doha, or Abu Dhabi, then a direct flight to Phuket International Airport (HKT).
  • Via Asia: You can fly with Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, or Cathay Pacific, stopping in Singapore, Bangkok, or Hong Kong, then taking a short flight to Phuket.
  • Via Europe: Some travelers opt for a layover in London, Frankfurt, or Paris, then fly to Bangkok before reaching Phuket.

Our favorite airline for this type of trip is Etihad which connects through Abu Dhabi. We connected through Abu Dhabi on Etihad on our way to Mumbai where we caught our cruise ship.  You can check out Etihad Airline and book with them on our Airlines Reservations post.

Flight Duration

Expect a total travel time of 24–30 hours, depending on layovers and departure city.

Alternative Routes

  • Fly to Bangkok (BKK) first, then take a domestic flight to Phuket (1.5 hours).
  • Fly to Krabi (KBV) and take a ferry to Phuket

What is the Best Time of Year for Traveling to Phuket?

The best time of year for traveling to Phuket is from November to February, when the weather is warm, dry, and ideal for beach activities. This period marks the peak season, attracting the most visitors due to its favorable climate.
Here’s a seasonal breakdown:

  • High Season (November–February): Best for beach activities, boating, and sightseeing. Expect sunny skies and calm seas.
  • Shoulder Season (March–May): Warmer temperatures, but still good for outdoor adventures.
  • Low Season (June–October): The rainy season, with occasional showers and fewer crowds. Some activities may be limited due to strong winds and heavy rainfall.

If you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, traveling to Phuket during the shoulder season might be a great option. We made our two trips in February and march, respectively, which was a great time to go.

Traveling to Phuket, Thailand by Cruise Ship

Unlike our first visit to Phuket in 2023 when we arrived by plane from Singapore, this time we stopped in Phuket by Cruise Ship on our way to Malaysia and Singapore. Since Thailand has not constructed a cruise port in Phuket, we were forced to enter by tender through the Patong Jetty.
We were traveling on the Celebrity Millennium, which is a very comfortable and friendly ship.  We loved the Bar Tender in the Cellar Masters. While the famous Martini Bar is the most popular, we loved the personal service at Cellar masters.   You can book a Celebrity cruise in our Favorite Cruise Post.
Our visit was only for a short day, so we were somewhat limited in places to explore in Phuket.. Nevertheless, in addition to visiting the beach at Patong, we decided to take a one-hour ride-share ride over to the old section of Phuket and have lunch at our favorite Phuket restaurant, the Blue Elephant. Please follow the link for a full listing of our favorite restaurants in the world including the Blue Elephant, or simply follow along here and we will cover Phuket’s popular sightseeing places.

The Blue Elephant Phuket is located in an antique governor’s house, and is a great specimen of Sino-Portuguese architecture. It is in Phuket Town and a decent drive over from Patong Beach where our ship docked.

Patong Beach is perfect for those who love excitement, but if you prefer a quieter experience, nearby beaches in Phuket like Kata and Karon might be better. The beach was very active and well decorated to welcome tourists.
