Get Your Packing Items at Amazon
Many of the items that we are recommending can be easily purchased at Amazon. If you don’t have Amazon Prime membership, you can try a one-month free membership which can be cancelled at any time. If you intend to buy any of these items below, with Prime you will likely also qualify for free shipping, subject to certain minimum purchase thresholds. We’ve had Prime membership for years and in addition to free shipping, I love the free Amazon music and Prime video that is included.
Note: As an Amazon Associate, CosGuide4Travel earns a small commission for any qualifying purchases made on their website. We also have affiliate links with other providers. If you visit their sites, we may also receive a small commission. This helps offset the cost of providing our service. This in no way increases your cost of any product or service that you may purchase on their sites.
🌍1. Start With the Right Bag: Carry‑On, Checked, or Travel Backpack?
Before you pack items, you need to choose the right bag. Your luggage determines how much you can bring, how you organize small items, and how you handle heavy things or bulky items.
Carry‑On Luggage
A carry‑on bag or small cabin bag is ideal for:
- Short trips
- Budget airlines
- Travelers who want to avoid baggage fees
- People who prefer keeping important documents and valuables close
Carry‑on luggage forces you to pack only essential items, which is often the best way to avoid bringing too much stuff.
Checked Suitcase
A hard shell suitcase is great for:
- Long trips
- Cold weather destinations
- Travelers who need more room for extra items
- People carrying heaviest items like boots or jackets
Checked bags allow you to pack pairs of pants, sweaters, and bulky items without worrying about overhead bin space.
Tote Bag or Day Pack
Your tote bag or day pack is your personal item. It should hold:
- Travel documents
- Credit cards
- First aid kit
- Makeup bag
- Toiletry bag
- Water bottles
- Change of clothes (always pack one)
This bag stays under the seat in front of you — perfect for small items you need quickly.
Travel Backpack
A travel backpack is a great idea for:
- Adventure travel
- Multi‑city itineraries
- Travelers who want mobility
- People who pack light
Backpacks make it easy to move through airports, trains, and buses without dragging a suitcase.
Robin’s Personal Experience: Packing My Bags – Backpacks
I have used a Backpack that opens like a suitcase for years and find I can fit quite a lot of my clothes. It completely zips open, so the contents are laid out horizontally like a regular suitcase, easy to find what you need.
This is a light backpack that robin loves.
That said, I’m intrigued by the under-seat suitcases which often have wheels rather than strapping on the backpack. Here is one that looks really good:
Great Smaller bag, actually fits under the seat infront of you.
Light, fold-up backpacks are also helpful, especially if you are looking for something that you can use to carry items with you when you are walking and touring. Venture Pal makes a 1-lb backpack that folds up and is great to take with you on a hike or walk. You can get it at Amazon.
I also bring a tote bag with items that make my trip more enjoyable (see Packing Equipment and Accessories list).
Cos uses a really good backpack for his carry on. I think it also gives him a workout because he can fit a lot in it!

Packing My Bags: Your Suitcase and Packing Core Checklist
Having the right or wrong luggage can make or break a well-thought-out DIY travel plan. As your already learned, the first decision is whether you want to check your bag or bring everything as a carry on. Each has its pros and cons. If you are going for a longer time and/or have much to bring, you most likely will need to check your bag.
We have developed a suitcase and packing checklist that should help you with your packing requirements. Click the following button to select a free checklist to help you with your packing.

In case you have questions such as “What is Hawaiian Airlines Carry-on Liquids Policy?”, we suggest you check their website or other blogs that focus on those issues.
👕 3. Clothing Strategy: How to Pack Smart Without Overpacking
Clothing takes up the most space in your suitcase. The best way to pack clothing is to use a color scheme and build outfits around different items that mix and match.
Use a Color Scheme
Choose 2–3 colors that work together. This reduces the number of pairs of pants and tops you need.
Pack Versatile Clothing
Bring items that work for:
- Daytime exploring
- Dinner
- Travel days
- Cold weather layering
Avoid Overpacking
The only exception to minimalism is cold weather travel, where layers matter.
Use Packing Cubes
The use of packing cubes is a great way to:
- Compress clothing
- Organize outfits
- Separate clean clothes from dirty clothes
- Save extra space
We are big believers in compression packing cubes. At first, they can challenge you but once you become accustomed to them, they are invaluable. I find that they are efficient and make it much easier to pack and to find things quickly. Amazon Packing Cubes are all quite effective and not too expensive.
Travel Cubes are a great way to organize your packed items. We use them all the time.
Packing cubes prevent your entire suitcase from becoming a chaotic mess.
🧴 4. Toiletries & Personal Care: Small Items, Big Impact
Your toiletry bag should be compact, leak‑proof, and organized.
Use Travel‑Sized Toiletries
This saves less space and avoids TSA issues.
Shampoo Bars
A better option than liquid shampoo — they:
- Save space
- Reduce leaks
- Last a long time
Cotton Swabs & Makeup Essentials
Keep cotton swabs, makeup, and skincare in a smaller size pouch.
Ziploc Bag for Liquids
A Ziploc bag is a simple trick to prevent spills.
First Aid Kit
Include:
- Bandages
- Pain relievers
- Motion sickness tablets
- Antiseptic wipes
A first aid kit is one of the most essential items for any traveler.
🧼 5. Organizing Small Items: The Secret to Stress‑Free Packing
Small items get lost easily. Use small bags to organize categories:
Small Bags for Organization
- Electronics
- Toiletries
- Makeup
- Snacks
- Jewelry
- Medications
This prevents smaller items from sinking to the bottom of your suitcase.
Rubber Band Trick
Use a rubber band to keep cables tidy.
Hat Clip
A hat clip keeps your hat attached to your bag without crushing it.
Laundry Bag
A laundry bag keeps dirty laundry separate from clean clothes.
🧠 6. Weight Distribution: How to Pack Heavy Things Correctly
Packing heavy things incorrectly can damage your suitcase or make it hard to carry.
Best Way to Distribute Weight
- Place heaviest items near the wheels
- Keep lighter items on top
- Use compression bags for bulky clothing
- Avoid placing heavy items in your tote bag
Proper weight distribution protects your back and your luggage.
🧳 7. Genius Packing Hacks: Space‑Saving Tricks That Actually Work
These are the genius packing hacks that transform your packing experience.
Compression Bags
Compression bags reduce clothing volume dramatically.
Shower Caps for Shoes
A great idea to keep dirt off your clothes.
Plastic Bags for Dirty Laundry
Keeps odors contained.
Roll Clothing Instead of Folding
Rolling saves extra room and prevents wrinkles.
Use a Luggage Scale
Avoid overweight fees — especially on budget airlines. Most airlines limit the weight of your checked suitcase (usually 50-51 pounds) and size (no longer than 62 linear inches). Some overseas airlines have different limits so you should be familiar with those rules when travelling. We bought our first and second at Luggage Scale – Amazon. A handheld suitcase scale is worthwhile; just make sure you put it in the checked luggage once you have the weight. We were pulled aside in the TSA lane because the agent was suspicious of the scale. Also, we know there are also good luggage weight scale – Target and a Walmart luggage scale.
We use this scale device all the time. It helps avoid an embarrassing situation at the airline check-in if you need to remove items from your luggage, or even worse you need to pay more for being overweight.
Our first luggage scale worked great until it needed a new battery…which required the use of a small screwdriver to remove the battery. We have since found a battery-free scale, charged by simply shaking the battery. Genius!
Unlike the first luggage scale we acquired, this one doesn't need a battery. You just shake it to get it charged. Unfortunately, it may be out of stock, as it is very popular.
Pack Items Inside Shoes
A great way to store socks or smaller items.
Use a Tote Bag for Overflow
Your tote bag can hold:
- Snacks
- Water bottles
- Important documents
- Electronics
- Personal items
🌦️ 8. Packing for Different Weather: Hot, Cold, and Mixed Climate Trips
Weather determines what you bring.
Hot Weather
Pack:
- Lightweight fabrics
- Breathable clothing
- Sunscreen
- Hat clip
- Water bottles
Cold Weather

- Layers
- Thermal tops
- Warm socks
- Jacket
- Gloves

🛰️ 13. Packing My Bags – GPS Tracker for Luggage
When you check a bag, there’s always that moment of wondering whether you’ll ever see your stuff again. More travelers are now using a GPS tracker for luggage as a simple, reliable way to keep track of their belongings during flights, layovers, and long travel days.
We personally use the Tile Pro GPS Tracker in our checked bags. It’s small, dependable, and works with both Apple and Android, which makes it a better option for mixed‑device households. We also considered the Apple AirTag, but ultimately chose the Tile Pro because it has a replaceable battery—usually lasting about a year—so you don’t have to discard the entire device when the battery dies.
If your suitcase ever goes missing, a GPS tracker can help you locate it quickly, often before the airline does. It’s a great idea for anyone who checks luggage regularly or travels internationally.
An essential item needed to track your luggage, your keys, or anything that might get lost.
🏷️ 14. Packing My Bags – Luggage Tags
Distinctive luggage tags are another simple but highly effective way to protect your bags. For years, we tied colorful Christmas ribbon to our suitcase handles—easy to spot from a distance and helpful for preventing someone from accidentally grabbing our bag when they thought it was theirs.
Recently, we upgraded to bright green aluminum luggage tags attached with a stainless‑steel wire. They’re durable, highly visible, and far more secure than the standard leather straps that often break during long trips or rough handling.
These tags make it easy to identify your suitcase on a crowded carousel and add an extra layer of protection if your bag gets separated from you.
We also place our contact information inside the suitcase as a backup. If the exterior tag is torn off, the interior card gives airline staff another chance to reunite you with your luggage.
🧭 15. The Packing Process: Step‑by‑Step System
Here’s the easy way to pack your luggage efficiently.
Step 1: Lay Out Everything
See what you’re bringing.

Step 5: Add Toiletries
