Everybody talks about the Big 3 famous museums in NYC.  They are the following:

#2 NYC Manhattan Fun Museums: Met Cloisters

Museums for All - Cloisters

The Met Cloisters is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art that is dedicated to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. The museum’s collection of medieval and Byzantine art is among the most comprehensive in the world, and it encompasses the art of the Mediterranean and Europe from the fall of Rome in the fourth century to the beginning of the Renaissance in the early sixteenth century. The collection includes pre-medieval European works of art created during the Bronze Age and early Iron Age.

If you’re interested in medieval art and architecture, The Met Cloisters is a must-visit destination. The museum’s collection is extensive and includes sculptures, tapestries, illuminated manuscripts, paintings, frescoes, small statuettes, boxwood miniatures, and small reliquary shrines. The museum also has beautiful gardens that have been a major attraction since its opening in 1938. The gardens enhance both the setting in which the Museum’s collection of medieval art is displayed and the visitor’s understanding of medieval life.

The Cloisters is located at 99 Margaret Corbin Drive, in Fort Tyron Park at the northern end of Manhattan. Getting there is a challenge. When we visited the Cloisters in 2023, we took the “A train” to 190th street. Then we walked up the hill to Fort Tryon Park. It is a bit of a hike up to the Cloisters. So, if you are not up for a good walk, you might find another way to get there.

As we approached the Cloisters we thought it looked like an old monastery. However, the Cloisters is not an old monastery, but rather a museum that was designed to resemble a medieval monastery. The building was constructed in the 1930s and was designed by architect Charles Collens.

We are considering this area to be everything below 23rd Street, which includes several different neighborhoods. While some of these neighborhoods, like Greenwich Village, Wall Street, Chinatown and Little Italy have retained their traditional ambiance, other parts such as the Lower East Side and the Meat Packing District have changed their original character to become more tourist-friendly.
