Why Visit Porto and the Douro Valley
If you’re wondering why you should visit Porto and the Valley of the Douro River, the answer is simple. In the first place, it’s a one of best wine tourism experiences that we know of. Secondly, the Douro Region is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In similar fashion, so is Porto’s historic center and other historic sites in Porto.
Before we visited the region in 2024, our knowledge of the oldest demarcated wine region in the world was pretty limited. Previously, we knew that they made famous port wines. However, we were surprised to learn that they also made great table wines, both red and white wines. They have a large selection of grape varieties and cold winters enabling both the top wineries and even a small winery to provide a large port wine production.

Getting to the Douro Valley
To embark on your journey to the Douro Valley, you have several transportation options available. From Porto, you can take a scenic train ride along the Douro River or opt for a leisurely cruise on the water. If you prefer the flexibility of driving, renting a car allows you to explore the region at your own pace. Another popular choice is to join a guided tour. Here you can sit back and relax while a knowledgeable guide leads you through the vineyards and wineries of the Douro Valley.
We decided to take a River Cruise, starting on the Spain-Portugal Border and taking us along the Douro River to the beautiful town of Porto. We traveled with AmaWaterways. They offered us a series of outstanding excursions to various wineries and quintas. In addition, they provided a great selection of Douro Valley wines with both our lunches and dinners. Ama provided us transport from Madrid to the small town of Vega de Terrón, where we boarded our ship. They also provided us transport from Porto to Lisbon when we disembarked. Many people on the cruise were able to take flights home directly from Porto.
Whichever mode of transportation you choose, the journey to this picturesque wine region promises to be a memorable one.
When to Go to Porto and the Douro Valley
The best time to visit the Douro region is late May and early June, along with the harvest season (September). The weather is good at these times of year but is without the crowds (on the boats or roads) in August.
Immersing in History at Castelo Rodrigo
The first stop on our River cruise was the small village of Castelo Rodrigo. There you can immerse yourself in history at Castelo Rodrigo. It is a charming medieval village perched atop a hill overlooking the Douro River. As you wander through the cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.
Explore the ruins of the ancient castle, and visit the 16th-century church. In addition, admire the traditional Portuguese architecture that has been preserved throughout the centuries. Castelo Rodrigo offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. Thus, allowing you to imagine what life was like in this historic village hundreds of years ago.
By stopping in Castelo Rodrigo you will have not entered the heart of the Douro River Wine Region. But, you will get to see plenty of Almond and Olive Groves. Similarly, you will get to taste almond wine and olive oil

The train station here is historic and contains beautiful tile paintings depicting the history of the Douro wine.
Here, among the rolling hills and terraced vineyards, you’ll have the opportunity to witness firsthand the intricate process of winemaking that has been perfected over generations. We did not visit these five specific quintas which are all recommended by other wine enthusiasts. However, we did visit and had a private tour and lunch at Quinta de Avessada. The Quinta da Roêda is owned by CROFT, which we did visit at another location, We also sampled many of the wines from these quintas at the restaurants we ate at. All of these quintas offer winery tours.

For example we were surprised to learn that many of the grapes are still crushed by age-old stomping techniques.

Enjoy The City of Porto
Porto is Portugal’s second largest city. It is a beautiful city and a fun place to visit.
Porto is the home to the wine cellars of the Douro Valley. Many of the wine cellars, also known as the caves, provide a tasting room. Cave Calem that we visited also had a wine museum.
Porto’s presence as a port on the Atlantic Ocean, also makes it an ideal place to ship wine all over the world.
Wine is stored in Porto and not in the Douro Valley. This is because the weather conditions are not the best for storing the wine in the Douro Valley. Therefore, barrels of wine must find there way down the river from the Valley to the City of Porto where they are stored and the higher humidity works its magic. For many years they were transported by small Rabelo Boats.
However, this was a very difficult and dangerous way to transport the wine. Later, the wine was shipped by train for many years. But now, trucks have become the best ways to ship the barrels from the valley to Porto.
