Travel to Iceland

Flag of Iceland

Iceland is the Island of Fire and Ice

Why travel to Iceland? There are many reasons. Volcanoes, Glaciers, Geothermal Springs and Black Sand Beaches are abundant. The seafood in Iceland is outstanding. The people are very friendly. We were in Iceland in June during the longest day of the year. We tried to play golf at midnight, but it was still pretty cold and windy then, so we gave up that great idea.

Also, Iceland is the perfect place to visit, especially on a stop-over between Europe and North America. Icelandair allows a stop-over at no additional cost. Checkout available flights on Orbitz.

Traveling to Iceland During Covid in 2021

We traveled in 2021, and, despite needing to get checked for Covid three times before we arrived, we had a great time. During our travel in Iceland, we toured Reykjavik and visited the Great Geyser, the Blue Lagoon, Pingvellir National Park and the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano. All of which were very interesting and exciting places to visit. On our next visit to Iceland, we will want to visit more parts of the country further away from the Capital, Reykjavik.

Travel to Iceland, First Stop is Reykjavik

Reykjavik is the capital and the largest city in Iceland. It is the first stop for many flights from overseas. Reykjavik is also a city of color as can be seen in their wonderful painted streets.

The Divide Between Europe and the Americas

The Mid Atlantic Rift in Iceland, separates the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plates, meaning west Iceland is in North America and the rest of Iceland is in Europe. We found this as part of a tour of the Golden Circle which we booked through Get Your Guide. This is an amazing place when you think about it. Imagine seeing the plates separating the two continents. Incredible.

Travel to Iceland to see the Blue Lagoon

One of the most visited tourist sites is the Blue Lagoon. It is a geothermic bath that has healing waters and special facial treatments. It is a wonderful place to visit for a day trip. Although it seemed a little touristy, we still loved it. Gorgeous.

Travel to Iceland, Land of Great Food

Sign in from of restaurant, sarcastically referring to a negative TripAdvisor review.

Despite what somebody thought about this Pizza restaurant, we found Iceland to be the Land of Great Food. We had some of the best salmon that we have ever tasted., probably because the water is so cold, it creates an especially large layer of fat. We didn’t try the pizza, why would you in Iceland? But we did appreciate the sarcastic humor of the Icelandic people. And we also tried the famous hot dogs with crispy onions on top. It’s a national obsession.

Iceland Loves Their Elves and Trolls

Travel to Iceland North Trolls

Icelandic people love to tell stories about Elves and Trolls. The elves are considered the hidden people. When you go there, don’t make fun of their belief in these hidden people, because they are serious about them. They even build little houses for the elves. The Trolls on the other hand, are scary and are used to scare children to make them behave. The Trolls even made it over to the United States, where they are displayed in the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. See our Gardens Post, for more information about the Trolls in the Gardens.
