Best Time of Year to Begin Your Epic Norway 10-Day Itinerary
The best time to visit Norway depends on what kind of adventure you’re after—because this country transforms dramatically with the seasons.
Summer (June–August): Ideal for fjords, hiking & midnight sun
- Weather: Mild temperatures (15–25°C), long days, rainy days
- Highlights: Cruise the fjords, hike to Pulpit Rock, enjoy festivals, and experience the Midnight Sun in the north
- Crowds: High season, so book early for popular spots
Shoulder Seasons (May–early June & mid-August–September): Fewer tourists, great weather
- Weather: Still pleasant, especially in May
- Highlights: Spring blossoms or autumn colors, good for photography and quieter travel
- Bonus: May is typically the driest month nationwide
Winter (December–March): Northern lights & snow sports
- Weather: The winter months are colder months, and dark days, especially in the north
- Highlights: Skiing, dog sledding, and chasing the Aurora Borealis in places like Tromsø or Alta
- Tip: February–March offers clearer skies for northern lights than December–January
Spring (April–May): Nature awakening
- Weather: Unpredictable but improving
- Highlights: Waterfalls swell from snowmelt, and flowers begin to bloom
If you’re dreaming of fjords and scenic hikes, go in the summer months. If you’re chasing the northern lights, aim for late winter. And if you want fewer crowds, great deals, but still great views, May or September are golden.

While Cos and Robin were on their Norway 10-day Itinerary in two instances they were aware of situations when the public transportation options incurred problems and failed to deliver. Traveling on the public transportation options on the Norway in a Nutshell tour can have their challenges.
Travel Around Norway by Cruise Ship
Cruise Ships are a great way to complete your Norway 10-Day Itinerary as most of the places you want to visit are easily reached from sea. From these ports you can take simple one-day excursions to the places that are slightly more inland. Cos and Robin traveled on their Norway 10-Day Itinerary in August of 2025 on the Silversea Spirit cruise ship. It sailed round trip from Copenhagen and was a wonderful cruise. They visited all the designated places of interest on the Norway 10-Day Itinerary.
