15+ Reasons Why Iceland Should Be Your Next Trip

Iceland is a small island with an outsized reputation — a place where natural wonders, ancient culture, and dramatic landscapes collide in ways you won’t find anywhere else on Earth. Whether you’re dreaming of a road trip along the Ring Road, chasing the Northern Lights, or soaking in geothermal pools, Iceland delivers a travel experience that feels both otherworldly and deeply grounding.

Why travel to Iceland? There are many reasons. Volcanoes, Glaciers, Geothermal Springs, and Black Sand Beaches are abundant. The seafood in Iceland is outstanding. The people are very friendly. We were in Iceland in June during the longest day of the year. We tried to play golf at midnight, but it was still pretty cold and windy then, so we gave up that great idea. There is simply the romance of visiting Iceland, with all its natural beauty.

Reasons Why Iceland Should Be Your Next Trip

If you’re building your Iceland travel bucket list, here are the 15 unforgettable reasons why this land of fire & water should be your next adventure.

#15. Northern Lights — A Bucket‑List Natural Phenomenon

Few experiences compare to witnessing the Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis. Iceland’s location near the Arctic Circle makes it one of the best places in the world to see this natural phenomenon.

From September to April, the skies dance with greens, purples, and reds — a show that feels almost spiritual. Head to North Iceland, the south coast, or remote small villages for the darkest skies and the highest chance of success.

Whether you join a guided tour or chase the lights on a self-drive tour, it’s an unforgettable experience.

#14. Blue Lagoon — Iceland’s Iconic Geothermal Spa

The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most famous attractions — a milky-blue geothermal pool surrounded by black lava fields.

Its mineral-rich waters are naturally heated by volcanic activity, making it one of the world’s most unique geothermal pools. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long flight, and its proximity to the capital city makes it easy to visit.

Good news: Iceland has dozens of natural hot springs and geothermal spas, so the Blue Lagoon is just the beginning.

#13. Ring Road — The Ultimate Road Trip

The Ring Road circles the entire country, making Iceland one of the world’s best destinations for a road trip.

Along the way, you’ll encounter:

  • Black sand beaches

  • Majestic waterfalls

  • Lava fields

  • Small villages

  • National parks

  • Natural attractions

A self-drive tour gives you the freedom to explore hidden gems, stop for photos, and enjoy the open road at your own pace.

#12. Waterfalls -- More Than You Can Count

If you take the Ring Road around the entire coast of Island, you can see almost all of the wonderful waterfalls.

#11. Natural Hot Springs — Relaxation in the Wild

Iceland’s natural hot springs are scattered across the country — from hidden pools in South Iceland to steaming rivers in the highlands.

These springs offer:

  • Warm water heated by volcanic activity

  • Stunning scenery

  • A peaceful atmosphere

  • A chance to meet locals

Some are easy hikes away, others require a rental car and a sense of adventure. Either way, soaking in a natural hot spring is a great experience.

#10. Natural Wonders — Everywhere You Look

Iceland is overflowing with natural wonders shaped by ice, fire, and time.

Expect to see:

  • Glaciers

  • Volcanoes

  • Fjords

  • Basalt columns

  • Crater lakes

  • Ice caves

This small island packs more dramatic scenery into its borders than almost anywhere else on Earth.

#9. Road Trip Freedom — Scenic Routes and Hidden Gems

If you love scenic drives, Iceland is paradise. The country’s scenic routes take you past natural attractions, coastal cliffs, and remote landscapes that feel untouched.

Whether you’re exploring the west coast, north Iceland, or the south coast, every turn reveals something new.

A rental car is a good idea — it gives you flexibility and access to places tour buses skip.

#8. Black Sand Beaches — Iceland’s Dramatic Coastline

Iceland’s black sand beaches are unlike anything you’ll find in North America or Europe. Formed by volcanic activity, these beaches create a stark contrast with the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Reynisfjara, on the south coast, is the most famous — but lesser-known beaches offer quieter, safer, and equally stunning views.

#7. Lava Fields — Walk Through Iceland’s Fiery Past

Iceland’s lava fields stretch for miles, creating surreal landscapes that look like another planet. Covered in moss and shaped by centuries of volcanic activity, these fields are a reminder of Iceland’s powerful geological forces.

Exploring them is a unique experience you won’t forget.

#6. Icelandic Horses — A Gentle, Iconic Breed

The Icelandic horse is small, sturdy, and beloved for its friendly nature. These horses have lived on the island for over 1,000 years and are known for their unique gait, the tölt. Although the horses are smaller than other breeds, the breed is long-lived and hardy, owing to the ruggedness of its home country.

A horseback ride through South Iceland or the countryside is a peaceful way to connect with Iceland’s local culture.

#5. Land of Fire & Water — Volcanoes and Glaciers Together

Iceland is famously the land of fire & water — a place where glaciers sit beside active volcanoes.

This contrast creates:

  • Ice caves

  • Lava tubes

  • Geothermal pools

  • Glacial rivers

  • Steam vents

It’s a natural phenomenon that makes Iceland one of the world’s most fascinating travel destinations.

#4. Midnight Sun — Long Days and Endless Adventures

During the summer months, Iceland experiences the midnight sun, where daylight lasts nearly 24 hours.

This means:

  • More time for outdoor activities

  • Longer hikes

  • Late-night photography

  • Extended road trip days

It’s one of the best things about visiting Iceland in summer.

#3. Thingvellir National Park — History and Geology Collide

Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the highlights of the Golden Circle route.

Here you can:

  • Walk between two continents

  • Explore volcanic rifts

  • Learn about Iceland’s ancient parliament

  • Enjoy easy hikes

It’s one of Iceland’s most important natural attractions. The Mid Atlantic Rift in Iceland, separates the North American and the Eurasian tectonic plates, meaning west Iceland is in North America and the rest of Iceland is in Europe.

We found this as part of a tour of the Golden Circle which we booked through Get Your Guide. This is an amazing place when you think about it. Imagine seeing the plates separating the two continents. It's not often you can see the separation of two continents so clearly.

#2. Geothermal Pools — Iceland’s Relaxation Culture

Beyond the Blue Lagoon, Iceland is filled with geothermal pools — from modern spas to rustic hot pots.

These pools are part of daily life for Icelanders and offer a relaxing way to unwind after exploring majestic waterfalls, glacier hikes, or long drives.

#1. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon — A Top Spot for Iceberg Views

The Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (also spelled Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon) is one of Iceland’s most breathtaking sights.

Here you can:

  • Watch icebergs drift toward the ocean

  • Spot seals

  • Take a boat tour

  • Photograph the nearby Diamond Beach

It’s a top spot on any Iceland bucket list and a truly unforgettable experience.

Bonus Reasons for Definitely Making the Trip

If these 15 reasons weren't enough to convince you to travel to Iceland, here are 4 Bonus reasons:

Bonus #1: Whale Watching — Iceland’s Ocean Giants

Iceland is the whale-watching capital of Europe, home to humpback whales, sperm whales, and minke whales. Whether you depart from North Iceland, the west coast, or Reykjavík, a whale-watching tour is a great experience that connects you to the wildlife of the Atlantic Ocean.

Bonus #2: First Stop is Reykjavik

Reykjavik is the capital and the largest city in Iceland. It is the first stop for many flights from overseas. We weren't expecting Reykjavik to be a city of so much color as can be seen in their wonderful painted streets.  You can see the famous Hallgrimskirkja Church at the head of the street.

Bonus #3: Layover between Europe and America

Iceland is the perfect place to visit, especially on a stop-over between Europe and North America. Icelandair allows a stop-over at no additional cost. Checkout available flights on Expedia.

Bonus #4: Travel to Iceland, Land of Great Food

Despite what somebody thought about this Pizza restaurant, we found Iceland to be the Land of Great Food.

Funny chalkboard sign about worst pizza ever.

We had some of the best salmon that we have ever tasted., probably because the water is so cold, it creates an especially large layer of fat. We didn't try the pizza, why would you in Iceland? But we did appreciate the sarcastic humor of the Icelandic people. And we also tried the famous hot dogs with crispy onions on top. It's a national obsession.

Bonus #5: Iceland Loves Their Elves and Trolls

Icelandic people love to tell stories about Elves and Trolls. The elves are considered the hidden people. When you go there, don't make fun of their belief in these hidden people, because they are serious about them. They even build little houses for the elves. The Trolls on the other hand, are scary and are used to scare children to make them behave.

The Trolls even made it over to the United States, where they are displayed in the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. See our Gardens Post, for more information about the Trolls in the Gardens.

Traveling to Iceland During Covid in 2021

Robin and Cos made their first visit to Iceland in 2021, and, despite needing to get checked for COVID-19 three times before they arrived, they had a great time. During our travel in Iceland, they toured Reykjavik and visited the Great Geyser, the Blue Lagoon, Pingvellir National Park and the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano on a Golden Circle tour with Get Your Guide.  All of which were very interesting and exciting places to visit. On their next visit in 2026 they plan to visit more parts of the country by taking a 7-day Ring Road Tour.

Final Thoughts

Iceland’s ideal location, dramatic landscapes, and rich culture make it one of the world’s most compelling travel destinations. Whether you’re exploring hidden gems, soaking in geothermal pools, or driving the Ring Road, Iceland offers unique experiences that stay with you long after you return home.

If Iceland isn’t already on your bucket list, it’s time to add it — and maybe even make it your next trip.
