Is Amsterdam Worth Visiting?

Before we actually talk about “How long is a flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam?,” lets answer “Is Amsterdam Worth Visiting?”

Amsterdam is the most famous city in the Netherlands. It is known for its beautiful canals, historic buildings, and vibrant nightlife. Amsterdam is also known for its unique liberal views being the first place that we know of that legalized marijuana. It also legalizes the world’s oldest profession: prostitution, with its famous Red-Light District. Amsterdam is also an important city for

More importantly, Amsterdam has some of the most important museums in the world.  The Van Gogh Museum is a must visit museum for anyone who is interested in great paintings.

Robin and Cos visited Amsterdam in the Spring of 2022 and returned in the fall of 2023. Cos had actually worked in Amsterdam for six months in 2001, and has traveled there at least a dozen times. Since they now live in “Delta Country,” most recently they traveled from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Clearly, they both love Amsterdam.

The Dutch, Holland, The Netherlands and Amsterdam

The Netherlands, mistakenly known as Holland, is a country located in Western Europe. It is famous for its beautiful landscapes, windmills, and tulips. People from the Netherlands are called Dutch because of the historical and linguistic origins of the word.  The Netherlands is also known for its vibrant cities and rich history. Amsterdam, the capital city, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Holland vs the Netherlands

Many people use the terms Holland and the Netherlands interchangeably, but they are not the same. Holland refers to two provinces in the Netherlands, North and South Holland. These two provinces are home to some of the country’s most famous cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht. the Netherlands is the entire country.

How Long is a Flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam?

So you want to how “How long is a flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam? “Like so many questions, the answer is it depends. In this case it depends on whether you are flying direct of doing a one or two-stop journey.

Direct Flights

The following airlines provide nonstop flights from Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport: Delta Air Lines, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic. Not surprisingly, they are all partners in the Sky Team Alliance, which means despite which airline you book your flight with, you are probably going to be flying on the same plane. In any case, the flight distance as the crow flies is approximately 4,400 miles (about 7,082 kilometers). Since you’re thinking about flights, that translates to roughly 9 hours and 18 minutes of air time on a direct route. However, the airlines are scheduling the flights for less than 9 hours, so they must fly a little faster than the previous calculation.  In fact, according to Google Flights, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has the fastest direct flight time of 8 hours and 15 minutes. Flying time will vary based on the air currents, aircraft type, and average fight speed.

The cheapest Delta round-trip flight and the cheapest KLM round-trip flight will vary greatly by when you fly and when you book.  Flying on non-holiday dates, mid-week in the off season we found round-trip cheap flights as low as $660.  In the peak summer season those same flights will cost around twice as much.

The one problem you will find is that the earliest flight doesn’t leave Hartfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport until 3:30 pm which means you will fly overnight and arrive at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport, with the time difference of six hours, the next morning around 6 am. Flight departure times for other flights are even later with later arrival times. The latest flight from Hartfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport departs at 10:40 pm and arrives in Amsterdam after 1 pm the next day.  Please know that airlines regularly change their flight times, so check with the airline to see the actual current flight times.

Also, please note, that the busiest airport in the United States is the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Make sure you leave enough time to check-in, go through the security lines and take the trains to your departure gate  The international gates at ATL are often furthest from the check-in..

Full Flight Schedule

Other scheduled flights, requiring one or two stops, will take a little longer.  The airlines offering these one or two stop flights include United Airlines, Jet Blue, American Airlines, Air Canada, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Finnair and Iberia.  Sometimes they will offer the least expensive round-trip flights, but the flight times will be longer depending on the connection times in other airports.  The shortest fight time we found was 12 hours, with a 2 1/2 hour connection time. Note, we do not recommend that you take a flight that connects in Europe, as you will need to go through immigration checks when you arrive. That may further delay your connection time, or cause you to miss your connection.

The cheapest days to get the lowest flight prices are mid-week, Tuesday thru Thursday, and the lowest price for a one-stop flight might be using a discount airline to travel from home to a direct departure airport.  For example traveling on Jet Blue from Atlanta, to JFK and then to Amsterdam, New York flights can cost less than half of the direct flight cost from Atlanta to Amsterdam.  However, the connect time in JFK may be as long as five hours. So, if time isn’t an issue, this may be a way to save a little with the lowest fares. Turkish Airlines may also be a decent alternative with a connection in Istanbul. Travel time will definitely be longer, but you may be able to arrange a free layover in Istanbul on you way to Amsterdam.

Regarding the United States other most popular airlines, United Airlines will offer one-stop connects on their Chicago flights, and American will offer one-stop connections through their Philadelphia gateway.  However, both alternatives will require at least three or four more hours of travel time, and the cost difference is not significant.  Nevertheless, depending on which loyalty program you favor, traveling on your favorite carrier may be the better overall flight travel experience because of the benefits that you are entitle to, such as free baggage, use of airport lounges, etc. However, our preference is to belong to join each loyalty program, and to choose the quickest and most reliable and convenient flight.  Living in the Southeast, that often turns out to be Delta departing from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Other United States Departure Airports

There are quite a large number of other airlines that offer direct flights to Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport. They include the following listed by Alliance Team offering nonstop service:

  • Boston (BOS)
  • Detroit (DTW)
  • Minneapolis (MSP)
  • New York City (JFK)

  • Philadelphia (PHL)
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – seasonal

🟦 JetBlue

  • Boston (BOS)
  • New York City (JFK) – seasonal

Flight times from these other cities will vary greatly depending on where in the United States you are departing from.  For example, a flight from JFK airport in New York City will take less than eight hours, while flights from other United States cities may take longer than the flight time from Atlanta. The West Coast flight times may be less than you might expect as these planes will take a flight path that is more northern, likely over the North Pole.  A KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight from Los Angeles was scheduled at 10 1/2 hours much less than the 14 hours plus in flight time if flying through New York City.

Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport

Whether you are trying to get to Amsterdam, other popular destinations in Holland or The Netherlands, your path will probably take you through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. This is a less crowded airport than the more popular ones in London, Paris and Frankfurt, so we like to use it as an entry point not only for Amsterdam and the Netherlands, but also for other European cities. Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport is home to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The KLM Cityhopper is the regional subsidiary of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, designed to connect smaller European cities to KLM’s main hub at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport. Think of it as the nimble little sibling in the KLM family—efficient, fast, and built for short-haul hops across Europe.

With its United States partner Delta Air Lines, KLM is a great airline to fly. For more airline information please see our Airlines Post.

Amsterdam 3-Day Itinerary – Museums

The city is home to some of the world’s most famous museums, including the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Moco Museum. You must get a reservation in advance in order to visit these museums as they are very popular.

Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum is dedicated to the works of the famous Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh. It houses the largest collection of his paintings and drawings in the world. In our opinion, it is the #1 place you must visit during the “Amsterdam 3-Day Itinerary.” Cos returned for what will be his fourth visit and Robin’s second in the fall of 2023. We were lucky to see a special addition to the Van Gogh, the series of paintings of olive trees painted when he was institutionalized in Arles. As a result of our visits, we have become avid Van Gogh addicts, searching out his paintings all over the world.

We recently saw the Van Gogh’s at the Met in New York and, while there, also saw another special collection of his cypress tree paintings, again, painted while in Arles.

Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is likely the most famous museum in Amsterdam and in our opinion is the second most important museum to visit on the “Amsterdam 3-day Itinerary.” It is home to some of the most important works of art from the Dutch Golden Age, including Rembrandt’s Night Watch. The pictures below the Night Watch are of William of Orange who in 1580 led the effort to rid the Spanish rulers from The Netherlands. Also, a merry jester in a picture that really comes to life as well as a picture depicting the takeover of the Catholic Churches by the Protestants in 1566.

Moco Museum

The Moco Museum is a newer addition to Amsterdam’s museum scene. It features contemporary art from artists like Banksy and Salvador Dali. While most know Dali well, Banksy is a little less well known. However, his street art has become quite famous, in spite of his reclusiveness. This museum is a Hidden Gem, located between the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum in an area known as the Museumplein.

Amsterdam 3-Day Itinerary: Canal Cruises and Leaning Buildings

One of the best ways to see Amsterdam is by taking a canal cruise. The city’s canals are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer a unique perspective on the city. We were fortunate to find a semi-private cruise on a classic wooden boat, powered by electricity as are most boats in the canals. With the high water level, there are many leaning buildings in Amsterdam. Many of the city’s historic buildings were constructed on wooden piles, and over time, they have started to lean. The most famous of these buildings is the Oude Kerk, a 14th-century church located in the red-light district. However, the Dancing Houses on the Damrak Canal, shown below, are also quite classic.

Day Trips from Amsterdam by Train: Windmills, Tulips and “The Girl With a Pearl Earing”

There are many interesting Day Trips from Amsterdam by Train to other places in both the Netherlands and in other cities in Europe.  Here is just a sampling:

Windmills

The Netherlands is famous for its windmills, which were used for centuries to pump water and grind grain. Many of these windmills are still standing today and have been preserved as tourist attractions. These windmills are in Kinderdijk which you can visit on a Rhine cruise, or on a day trip from Amsterdam by Train.

Kinderdijk – The Myth of the Cat in the Cradle

According to legend, the Saint Elizabeth’s Flood of 1421 ravished the land around Kinderdijk and drowned up to 10,000 people. The following day, an infant girl was found drifting in a crib.  The baby had remained afloat by the tireless efforts of a cat jumping back and forth on the cradle to keep the water out. Harry Chapin made the 1974 song “Cat in the Cradle” famous by referencing the myth. We were charmed to see this depiction below.

Day Trips from Amsterdam by Train to See Tulips

Tulips are very important to the Netherlands. Every spring, millions of tulips bloom in the fields surrounding Amsterdam, creating a stunning display of color. Unfortunately, we missed the tulip bloom by a few weeks, so we only have the windmills to show.

The Hague – Mauritshuis Museum

We decided on our second trip to Amsterdam in 2024, to expand our search for fine arts. Therefore, we decided to take a short trip to The Hague and visit the Mauritshuis Museum. As art lovers likely know, it is well known for iconic masterpieces, such as the Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer.
